Progressive Drawing Dies: When a die draws a flat sheet of metal into a certain shape, the material must move to the shape of the die. The flow of the material is controlled by applying pressure to the blank and applying lubricant to the die or blank. If the die moves too quickly, the part will wrinkle. To address this, increasing the pressure on the blank or reducing the amount of lubricant can restrict the material flow, causing it to stretch or thin. If too much pressure is applied, the part will become too thin and break.
Drawing metal is a science; finding the right balance between wrinkles and fractures to achieve a successful part is key.
As a general rule of thumb, a starting point of three times the metal thickness is a good starting point. If the part cracks, the tool has secured the metal, allowing the radius to be increased. Part specifications may require a smaller radius below the flange, which can be achieved with a single deep draw, rather than multiple deep draws to achieve the desired radius size.
