How the Blanking Process Works

The blanking process is performed on a stamping press using precision dies. The main components include:
Punch: The tool used to penetrate the material.
Die: The receiving cavity that determines the final shape.
Strip or Sheet Metal: The metal material to be cut.
As the punch descends, it shears the sheet metal into the die opening, thus separating the blank from the rest of the sheet. If the die is properly designed, this process offers high repeatability and allows for tight tolerances.

Key Advantages of Blanking

The widespread use of blanking technology stems from its following advantages:
1. High Repeatability
Through well-designed dies, blanking can produce parts with minimal variation and high consistency during production-a major advantage of mass production.
2. Tight Tolerances
Precision dies and controlled stamping operations enable tight dimensional control and minimal deformation.
3. Efficient Material Utilization
Since the blank is the intended part, efficient layout and nesting strategies reduce scrap and lower material costs.
4. Variety of Part Shapes
Blanking can produce products of various shapes-simple or complex-depending on die design and performance.
